About the Director
Jonathan Wallis brings over 25 years experience in international choral performance and direction to the role of Musical Director of Allegri Ensemble.
Although Jonathan sang in school choirs as a boy, it was during his time at the University of Melbourne that his love of choral music first truly emerged. As a member of both The Choir of Ormond College and Ensemble Gombert, he toured frequently in Europe and also appeared on numerous CD recordings.
While furthering his studies in Classics in Cambridge, UK, Jonathan sang with Pembroke College Chapel Choir and was founding director of the Wren Choir. A musical highlight of his time in Cambridge was the opportunity to complete a masterclass in conducting with the legendary Stephen Layton.
In 2009, after completing his doctorate, Jonathan took up a position as lecturer in the Classics Department of the University of Tasmania. Now a senior lecturer, he has nevertheless been active in the choral scene in Hobart as a member of Allegri Ensemble since 2014, and more recently with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Chorus. He has conducted the Loose Canon Chamber Singers and the Argyle Choir and Orchestra, whom he directed in two large-scale performances. He has also regularly conducted St David’s Cathedral Choir.
